Fair and Bio – an example from the Czech Republic

Fair and Bio – an example from the Czech Republic

We were the first to import fair products to the Czech Republic in 2004. At that time, at the Ecumenical Academy, we dealt with debt relief for developing countries, globalization and development. We had many supporters who wanted to be more actively involved, but there was no way. And so we started looking for new ways of concrete help. Through church circles in Germany and the Czech organization One World, we knew fair trade.

That’s when we decided to start importing fair coffee, tea and chocolate from German partners and offering them to local activists. We were lucky. It was at this time that the Carrefour chain began to show interest in fair trade products. And we were their only suppliers then. Although the cooperation with Carrefour did not last long (he left our market shortly afterwards), our wholesale went on.

An agri-food cooperative model from Greece

An agri-food cooperative model from Greece

In 2018 on the small island of Tilos in Greece a small cooperative company was created which operates in the agri-food sector. This production unit does not operate on the conventional terms of a typical capitalist enterprise. Very soon, the social character of this business model emerged through the integration into the production process of the refugees who lived in the hospitality center of the island.

With the practical help of the small Swiss municipality of Menier and the UNHCR, this project took shape by demonstrating the importance of social and solidarity economy, not only for the economic prosperity of a place but also for the benefits it offers on the social level.
